Changes to Arena Cove Recycling Center Begin October 10; Limited Hours; Return to Sorting Begin October 10
Big changes are coming to the Arena Cove Recycling Center.
Problems with single-stream recycling have arisen at the Arena Cove Recycling Center. The hauler has noticed a lot of contamination of materials, meaning that a large percentage of recycling dropped off is not actually capable of being recycled. Additionally, some have used the center to deposit garbage.
On October 10 2022, the current configuration of the recycling center will begin to change to a more efficient and cleaner operation. This will include new recycling bins, limited hours, and recycling separation.
The process will begin October 10 with a one-week closure to allow time for the old bins to be removed, repairs to be made to the fence and a deep cleaning of the recycling area. New bins will be delivered and the recycling center will reopen on October 17 under new rules and protocols.
The biggest change at the recycling center will be the method for recycling. Many years ago, residents sorted their recycling into separate containers. Garbage haulers later converted to “single-stream” or “commingled” recycling, where all recyclable materials are placed together.
Once the center reopens, there will be limited types of recyclable material that will be accepted. All recyclables will need to be separated. Separate bins will be available.
Only the following materials will be accepted at the Point Arena Recycling Center:
- Glass bottles and jars
- Aluminum and tin cans
- Cardboard and paper
- #1 and #2 plastics only
The hours for the recycling center will also change. The recycling center will no longer be available after 4pm daily. It will only be open between 7am and 4pm daily.
The Arena Cove Recycling Center is an important community resource. Please help keep it running by doing your part to only dispose of recyclable material.
