City Council Filing Period Begins July 16

The City of Point Arena will issue nomination papers for two City Council seats beginning July 16, 2018. Candidates please take note of the following important information:

DATE OF ELECTION: Tuesday, November 6, 2018. Polls open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

POSITIONS FOR ELECTION: City Council. two positions. The incumbents are Barbara Burkey and Anna Dobbins.

TERM OF OFFICE: Four-year terms, beginning December 2018 and ending December 2022.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS: All candidates must be 18 years of age, a Citizen of the United States, and a registered voter residing within the city limits of Point Arena,

NOMINATION PERIOD: Opens: Monday, July 16, 2018. Closes: Friday, August 10, 2018 at 3:00 p.m., unless an incumbent does not file, then the period is extended to Wednesday, August 15, 2018.

NOMINATION PAPERS AND CANDIDATE GUIDES: Nomination papers and guides will be available at City Hall, 451 School Street, on the first day of the nomination period, Monday July 16, 2018. “Pulling” nomination papers will take approximately 20 minutes. Office hours at City Hall are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. City Hall is closed on Wednesdays. Nomination papers and the candidate guide are NOT available via email.

COST: There is no cost to be issued nominations papers or receive a Candidate’s Guide. There is no fee to file nomination papers. If a candidate chooses to submit a candidate statement in the County Ballot guide, a deposit of $150 (English only) or $300 (English & Spanish) is required.

Street Fair ~ Fireworks ~ Parade

The most highly anticipated event on the South Coast – the Point Arena Independence Celebration – will occur the weekend of June 30 & July 1, 2018!  Join us for food, fun and the largest display of fireworks in the region in beautiful Arena Cove!

Saturday, June 30 – Street Fair & Fireworks Extravaganza

Come early and stay late for the Street Fair at Arena Cove.  Festivities kick off at 4:00 pm with food, bands, arts and crafts and entertainment.  The Fireworks Extravaganza by Devastating Pyrotechnics will explode into the night sky starting at dark.

Be sure to bring flashlights and jackets but leave your pets at home please.

$ 10.00 General Admission /$5 for youth 12-17  / children under 12 free / $20 for a family of four

Parking is limited/Shuttle bus available. Additional parking at City Hall (with shuttle service to the pier)

The Annual Downtown Parade steps off at noon on Main Street.  Groups are welcomed to join the parade.  Since this is a family-friendly parade, we ask you to keep things classy, safe, and fun.

Name the Park at Arena Cove

The City of Point Arena is seeking public input for naming our new park, located at Arena Cove above Arena Creek where the cypress trees are located.

The following names have been selected by the City Council for consideration.

Notes:

“Seafoam Park” refers to a vessel that was lost in1931 while enroute to San Francisco. Remnants of the wreck are still visible at low tide.

“Arena Cove Park” is self-explanatory.

“Raven Park” refers to former Mayor, Councilmember and businessman Raven Earlygrow.

“Yomta Park” refers to the Pomo word for “dreamer.”

“Mountain Beaver Park” refers to the Point Arena Mountain Beaver, a federally-protected species with habitat along Port Road.

Harbor & Seafood Festival

The 18th Annual Harbor & Seafood Festival

Sunday September 3, 2017 — Noon to 6pm
Point Arena Cove & Pier

This is an event that you don’t want to miss: a perfect setting with amazing food, stunning views, great company and all for a good cause – to raise money to keep our local pier operating all year long!

This year’s “Harborfest” menu features oysters, albacore kebabs, fish tacos, and abalone cakes!

Libations include craft beer courtesy of North Coast Brewery, assorted wines, and non-alcoholic beverages including soft drinks and homemade lemonade.

This year’s bands include local faves Fast Company, OZONE BBQ, and Chuckwalla as well as the Nelson Lunding Trio and 3 Sheets to the Wind.

The kids area hosts a bouncy house, face painting and a sea-themed sidewalk chalk art competition.

There is no entry fee and parking is free. Bring the kids, but please leave the dogs at home.

City Treasurer Position Available

The City Council of the City of Point Arena is accepting applications for the role of City Treasurer for a term beginning July 2017 to January 2018.  2-year terms of service will begin in January 2018.

The City Treasurer for the City of Point Arena is a volunteer position appointed by and serving at the pleasure of the City Council.   There is no limit to the number of terms that the appointee may serve. The Treasurer does not need to be City of Point Arena resident or a registered voter.  The Treasurer’s monthly stipend is $200 per month.  The position is not eligible for employment benefits.

The main duties of the City Treasurer include accounting for all money coming into and being expended by the City; signing checks; preparing or overseeing deposits to the City’s designated bank; collecting City taxes and license fees prescribed by City ordinance; and drafting and submitting a “Treasurer’s Report” and accounting of receipts and disbursements monthly to the City Manager/Clerk and City Council.

Prior accounting or bookkeeping experience is essential. Strong mathematical/accounting skills required.  Prior extensive use of accounting software being used by Point Arena is desired.
