Arena Cove & Pier Closed Temporarily

By a unanimous vote, the Point Arena City Council has enacted a temporary ordinance closing the Point Arena Pier and Arena Cove due to public health and safety concerns from the spread of the COVID19 virus. The Council will review the ordinance within the next 31 days.

The City Council found that continued parking and loitering at the Arena Cove parking lot and on Point Arena Pier poses a current and immediate threat to the public health, safety and welfare of the residents of the City of Point Arena and that adequate regulation was necessary.

“Our number one priority is to make decisions that ultimately benefit the health and welfare of the people in our community,” Mayor Scott Ignacio said, “We hope that implementing these measures now will shorten the time it will take for our businesses and our public areas to reopen.”

The Ordinance is twofold:

  • Loitering or remaining in the parking lot, on the pier, or other outdoor premises adjacent to the parking lot or pier without any apparent business purpose — such as commercial fishing — is prohibited until further notice.
  • The parking of vehicles at the Arena Cove parking lot is prohibited, unless related to the activities of commercial fishermen, Arena Cove businesses, or vessels that have paid parking privileges. This includes all automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, scooters, vessels and any other motorized vehicles.

The City Council will review the ordinance within 31 days for its continued appropriateness.

The County received its first positive test for COVID-19 on the South Coast in Gualala at a visitor-serving facility. Despite the County Public Health Officer’s Shelter-In-Place Order of March 18, 2020 and follow-up letter of March 19, 2020, the South Coast has seen an influx of visitors from outside the area including at Arena Cove.

On March 24, 2019, the County Public Health issued an updated order that limits the use of parks in the County to those that are accessible by walking and biking from one’s place of residence.

Coronavirus COVID-19

Regarding the Coronavirus Disease

While the number of reported coronavirus cases is low in the US, we feel that it is important to let you know what we are doing to help prevent the spread of the virus and provide additional education and resources to our employees.  Similar to prior virus outbreaks, such as SARS, it is important that we follow the guidance provided by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and our state and local health departments.

Background

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person.  Common signs and symptoms of this illness include fever, cough and difficulty breathing. In recently reported cases, symptoms have ranged in severity from mild illness to death. The time from exposure to symptom onset ranges from two to 14 days. The virus can be spread from person-to-person, but it is unclear how easily 2019-nCoV is spreading between people at this time. While the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) considers the current risk of infection in the U.S. to be low, risk for infection is higher in health care settings such as hospitals and clinical laboratories.

There are simple everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses. These include:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available

If you are sick, to keep from spreading respiratory illness to others, you should:

  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

Harbor & Pier Operations Technician

The City of Point Arena seeks a Harbor & Pier Operations Technician.

Responsibilities of the position include performing a variety of semi-skilled work in the construction, modification, maintenance, repair and operation of the City’s Harbor, Pier and related waterfront facilities and systems; provides assistance in the overall Harbor and Pier operations, including customer services activities related to facilities rentals, usage, boat berth assignments, fees intake, and contract monitoring; and performs related work as required.

This is the entry-level class in the public harbor and pier operations series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents with basic maintenance experience learn Harbor and Pier facilities, systems, and related infrastructure, use of tools and equipment, and a wide variety of practices and procedures. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence.

16 – 24 hours per week @ $16.76 – $20.13 per Hour plus Benefit Package

Responsibilities of the position include performing a variety of work in the construction, modification, maintenance, repair and operation of City infrastructure, including streets, traffic controls and structures, storm water systems, parks, landscapes, and street trees; performs related work as required.

This is the full supervisory-level class. Incumbents are expected to independently perform the full range of public works maintenance duties. Performance of the work requires the use of considerable independence, initiative and discretion within established guidelines.

32- 40 hours per week @ $24.47 – $29.74 per Hour plus Benefit Package

Library Advisory Board Vacancy

The City of Point Arena seeks an individual to serve on the Mendocino County Library Advisory Board. The Library Advisory Board plays an important role in the development of quality improvements in local library branches, including Coast Community Library. It helps guide library policy, reviews the budget and advises the Library Director. The Board meets monthly at venues around the county. Preference is given to a City resident. The term of service is two years. Applications are due January 27.

Halloween at the Garden 2019

Halloween Garden 2019

Join us for the 2nd Annual Haunted Garden on Halloween Night!

Created by local artists and community members with assistance from the City of Point Arena, the Haunted Garden will delight children and adults alike with Zombie Mermaids, Billy Ketchum’s Weird Zoo, Dracula’s Coffin, a Pumpkin Patch, and more!!

  • 4-5:30pm — Not-So-Scary Halloween Garden for youngsters. Merchants on Main Street will also be ready for trick-or-treaters!
  • 6-9:00pm —  Sorta Scary Halloween Garden for teens and adults.

On November 1, there will be a Day of the Dead Celebration from 1pm-6pm.

California Coastal Cleanup Day welcomes more than 60,000 volunteers statewide who pick up hundreds of thousands of pounds of trash and recyclables from beaches, lakes, and waterways each year. It brings awareness to the marine litter problem and provides a community event for direct involvement. Help us by joining in the fight to preserve wildlife by taking trash out of the environment.

This event is part of the International Coastal Cleanup, organized by the Ocean Conservancy. California Coastal Cleanup Day is the largest volunteer event in the US and International Coastal Cleanup Day is the largest volunteer event on the planet.

This is an event that you don’t want to miss! A stunning coastal setting with local seafood, local bands and local brews, all for a great cause – raising money to keep our local pier operating for the public all year long!

This year’s menu features BBQ Oysters, Point Arena Salmon Cakes, Baja Fish Tacos, Island Albacore Kebabs, New England Clam Chowder and Gulf Coast Shrimp Cocktail along with BBQ corn-on-the-cob, fresh salad and fries, hot dogs and burgers, and a variety of soft drinks and locally-made desserts.

Libations include local craft beer courtesy of North Coast Brewery, local assorted wines, hard cider from OZ Farm, and non-alcoholic beverages including homemade lemonade and mineral water.

This 20th Annual Harborfest hosts live performances by local and regional acts The Casuals, JJ Mulekat, Burnside, and Middle Children.

A kid’s area will host a bouncy house and gaming center as well as fun activities by ACTION Network and ACORN Partners in Education.

There is no entrance fee for the event. Purchase $1 tickets at the entrance gate for food, drink and activities. This is a cash-only event.

Parking is available in the adjacent Rock Wall park and along the north side of Port Road only.

Please bring your kids, but please leave your dogs at home.
