BLM Conducting Prescribed Fire

BLM to conduct prescribed fire at Point Arena

two fire fighters observe a pile burn

POINT ARENA, Calif. — The Bureau of Land Management’s Ukiah Field Office plans to conduct prescribed fire operations in the Point Arena-Stornetta Unit of the California Coastal National Monument in Mendocino County. Pile-burn operations could start as soon as Dec. 8 and may continue periodically through fall, winter and spring. Prescribed fire operations will take place only when weather and fuel moistures allow for safe and successful burning.

The BLM Ukiah Field Office has been conducting hazardous tree felling and conifer abatement treatments in the unit since 2021. These treatments include thinning of timbered areas and use of prescribed fire.

“The BLM is committed to keeping public landscapes healthy and productive; pile burning is the next step in the progression of treatments that are designed to provide for public safety, reduce hazardous fuels for wildfire, and restore areas of coastal prairie from conifer encroachment,” said Leisyka Parrott, California Coastal National Monument manager.

Situated along the rugged Mendocino County coastline adjacent to the town of Point Arena, the Point Arena-Stornetta unit features 8 miles of walking paths that offer spectacular views from the coastal terrace of sea arches, offshore rocks and islands, and the Garcia River estuary. More information is available from the BLM Ukiah Field Office at 707-468-4000.

The BLM manages about 245 million acres of public land located primarily in 12 western states, including Alaska, on behalf of the American people. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. Our mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of America’s public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

Pier Closure for Hoist Repair: Oct 18 – End of November

🚧 Pier Closure for Hoist Repair: Oct 18 – End of November 🚧

The Point Arena Pier will be closed to all commercial and sport vessels from October 18 through the end of November while City staff repair the hoist bonnet to ensure safe and reliable operation.

➡️ No vessel launches will be available during this time.

Restrooms and showers will remain open.

🎣 Fishing access will still be available in the designated public fishing area (no fishing license required).

This project is part of a larger hoist system improvement effort funded by the California Coastal Conservancy.

City of Point Arena Announces End of Used Oil Recycling Program

📢 The Used Oil Recycling Program will officially end on September 30, 2025 due to a lack of funding and staffing.

👉 For many years, the program was supported by CalRecycle grants. Since that funding ended in 2022, the City has covered nearly $10,000 from the General Fund to keep it going. Unfortunately, we can no longer continue without outside support.

💬 “The City regrets having to close this program, which has benefited our community and region for many years.”

🌿 That’s a wrap on Point Arena Clean-Up 2025!

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who came out to — your time, energy, and community spirit made a big impact! From the beaches to the backroads, Point Arena is looking better because of you. We’re grateful for all the volunteers, City staff, and partners who made this event possible.

We removed ~403 cubic yards of garbage from Point Arena!

We want to extend a heartfelt apology to those who were impacted by the closure of Day 2 of Clean-Up Day. Due to the incredible turnout and high volume of materials dropped off on Day 1, all bins filled to capacity much sooner than expected. We understand that this was disappointing for those who planned to participate on the second day. Now we know, Clean-Up Day operates on a first-come, first-served basis, and unfortunately, once the bins are full, we are unable to accept additional materials.

We truly appreciate the passion and effort this community brings to keeping Point Arena clean and beautiful. Your participation matters. Thank you for your understanding, and for continuing to show up for your city. 💚 We look forward to serving you again, in 2026.

Volunteer Opportunities for Point Arena Clean Up Day

Join us in making Point Arena shine! We’re looking for dedicated volunteers to support our city-wide clean-up effort.

Whether you have an hour or a day to give, there’s a role for everyone.

📍 Where: County Yard, 43401 Eureka Hill Rd (dumping site)

🕘 When: June 7 & 8, 9:00 AM–3:00 PM (dumping site hours)

Volunteers are needed both prior to and on the Clean-Up Day!

Volunteer shifts run from 2 hours to as long as you would like to participate.

Here’s how you can help:

Yard Assistance Team

Help community members — including older adults and people with disabilities — tidy up their yards and homes. Tasks may include light raking, debris collection, and moving materials to the curb or a vehicle. Volunteers should be able to perform light physical work and bring a friendly, helpful attitude.

Hauling Crew

Got a truck and/or trailer? We need you AND your wheels! Assist with transporting bagged trash, green waste, and bulky items from homes or collection points to the main disposal site. Must have a valid driver’s license and be comfortable securing and hauling loads safely.

Traffic and Voucher Check-In Team

Welcome participants, collect vouchers, and help direct traffic at the drop-off site. Volunteers will assist with signage, greeting and guiding drivers, and ensuring pedestrian safety. This is a great role for organized, friendly individuals who enjoy working outdoors and can remain calm under pressure.

Loading Assistance Crew

Strong arms needed! Help lift and place heavier trash items into dumpsters and bins at the main disposal site. Volunteers should be able to lift up to 50 pounds safely, bring their own protective gear (gloves, glasses), and work well as part of a team.

Refreshment Station Volunteers

Support our hard-working volunteers by keeping them fueled and hydrated! Help set up, serve snacks and water, and check on teams at work sites. A perfect role for those who like to nurture and encourage others.

Calling All Musicians! 🎶

We invite local musicians to volunteer their talents at the County Yard during Clean Up Day. Live music will help lift spirits, create a festive atmosphere, and keep the energy high as we work together.
If you love to play and want to be part of this special community event, we would love to hear from you!

All volunteers will receive snacks and lots of appreciation!
Check with your school for service hour eligibility.

All volunteers are required to sign a waiver with the City of Point Arena.

We thank you in advance for your service and for helping to make our community shine!
