Public Safety Power Shutoff Information

As part of PG&E’s Community Wildfire Safety Program, PG&E is implementing additional precautionary measures to help reduce the risk of wildfires. If extreme fire danger conditions threaten a portion of the electric system serving the community, PG&E may turn off electricity in the interest of public safety. This is called a Public Safety Power Shutoff.

Your energy company makes the decision to turn off power by monitoring local fire danger conditions across California and taking into consideration a combination of weather and environmental factors.

For more information on the factors used to determine PSPS events please visit www.prepareforpowerdown.com.

In the event of a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS), PG&E will provide notifications to their customers. Power outages could last multiple days depending on the severity of the weather and other factors. It is important that you and your family have an emergency preparedness plan in place. Point Arena residents should prepare now for a PSPS event.

Preparedness Tips

  • Update your contact information with PG&E.  Visit pge.com/mywildfirealerts or call 1-866-6589.
  • Sign up for MendoAlert to receive updates about power outages and other emergency notifications.
  • Review PG&E’s website to learn more about preparing you and your family for these events.
  • Learn more about preparing for a PSPS event at www.prepareforpowerdown.com.
  • Plan for power outages with resources from www.ready.gov.
  • Review the Department of Energy’s generator safety and usage guidelines and PG&E’s backup generator guide and resources
  • Extended power outages associated with PSPS events may impact the whole county. Take an inventory now of the items you need that rely on electricity.
  • Plan for batteries and other alternatives to meet your needs when the power goes out.
  • Talk to your medical provider about a power outage plan for medical devices powered by electricity and refrigerated medicines. Find out how long medication can be stored at higher temperatures and get specific guidance for any medications that are critical for life.
  • Keep mobile phones and other electric equipment charged and gas tanks full.
  • Review your supplies that are available in case of no power. Have flashlights with extra batteries for every household member. Have enough nonperishable food and water.  Prepare an emergency supply kit.
  • Install Carbon Monoxide detectors with battery backup in central locations on every level of your home.
  • Keep freezers and refrigerators closed. The refrigerator will keep food cold for about four hours. A full freezer will keep the temperature for about 48 hours. Monitor temperatures with a thermometer. Use coolers with ice during a prolonged power outage.

Sewer Smoke Tests October 24 & 25

CITY OF POINT ARENA TO CONDUCT SEWER SMOKE TESTS OCTOBER 24 & 25

The City of Point Arena Sewer Department will be cleaning and smoke testing the sewer collection system this year. Smoke testing will occur Wednesday October 24 and Thursday October 25.

This project is being done in an effort to limit the cost of sewage treatment plant expansions that will be necessary over the next few years.   The sewer trunk lines and mains will be jetted clean, so the problems won’t be hidden by debris and silt. This operation will be started at School Street and will work south through town. When the cleaning of the system is complete, smoke testing will begin.

The smoke testing will start at the north end of town working south. The smoke testing is an integral part of this maintenance program aimed at reducing rainwater and ground water infiltrating the sewers. The smoke will escape through cracks, breaks, storm water tie-ins such as rain leaders, and uncapped clean-outs.

The smoke is not toxic and will not harm anyone. However, occasionally smoke will come out of drains in houses that are not piped properly. If this happens at your house or business, it is advised you contact the building inspector and a plumber to fix problem as soon as possible.  If the smoke gets in your house, so will sewer gases which could be toxic or explosive if the right conditions exist.

If there are quustions about this project or process, please call (707) 353-0062.  Asking the crew as they perform the cleaning and testing will only slow the process and prolong the project.

/ Daniel Lee, Chief Plant Operator

Port Road Maintenance Project Begins August 14

Port Road in Point Arena will be subject to one lane traffic control beginning August 14 through August 17 from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm as part of the Port Road Maintenance Project.

The first phase of the project entails asphalt removal, dig outs, new compacted road base and relaying of asphalt in the portions of roadway and bike lane that have suffered base failures.  Cracks in the asphalt surface of the road will be filled and sealed.  The second phase of the project entails application of slurry seal sometime in September.

The project was designed by SHN Engineering in Fort Bragg with construction performed by Wylatti Resource Management in Covelo.

SB1 Local Partnership Program Funds is providing $200,000 for the project with additional funds coming from the Mendocino Council of Governments.

SB 1, The Road Repair and Accountability Act, invests more than $5 billion annually directly for maintenance, repair, and safety improvements on state highways, local streets and roads, bridges, tunnels and overpasses. $200 million in funding for the Local Partnership Program helps match locally generated transportation funds.
